What Does Coaching Mean to You?

What Does Coaching Mean to You?

For me, it’s about having a verbal reasoning partner.

When I try to think through things in my head, it’s like a crowded room. So many voices, all competing for my attention. Each one telling me a different story. It gets noisy in there. I can’t always find the answers I need.

But when I speak out loud, it’s different.

I hear my words in real time. I can catch them, examine them, and decide what to do with them. That’s why coaching works for me. It’s not about being given advice or step-by-step solutions. It’s about being heard.

Why a Verbal Reasoning Partner Matters

My coach doesn’t have to understand every detail. They don’t need to know the ins and outs of my brain. What they bring is presence. They’re there, listening with patience and curiosity. They help me talk things out.

Sometimes I think people misunderstand coaching. They think it’s about fixing problems or following a formula. For me, it’s a safe space to let the thoughts out. The mess. The confusion. The raw, unfiltered stuff that’s hard to share with anyone else.

Letting the ADHD Ramble Flow

You know that feeling when your head’s spinning and you just need to talk? That’s where the magic happens.

A good coach knows that. They let you ramble. They don’t interrupt with quick fixes or tidy answers. They hold the space so you can process.

I’ve lost count of the times I’ve stumbled over an idea mid-sentence, then picked it back up and found a solution just by talking it through. It’s like my brain needs to hear itself think.

Coaching as an Ongoing Conversation

It’s not a one-off event. Coaching is a relationship. It’s ongoing. It builds trust. Over time, you learn to bring the messy bits without shame.

A lot of us with ADHD grew up hearing that we talk too much. That we should think before we speak. But what if speaking is how we think?

That’s what coaching gives me. Permission to think out loud. A partner who’s okay with the tangents, the sudden leaps in logic, the occasional loss of the thread.

What Does Coaching Mean? It’s Not About Answers

It’s easy to think coaching is about getting answers. But for me, it’s about finding the answers within. Talking it out. Saying the thing I didn’t know I needed to say.

That’s where the gold is.

A coach is a guide, not a director. They don’t force you down a path. They walk with you, helping you notice the things you might miss on your own.

Finding Clarity Through Words

There’s power in saying things out loud.

When my thoughts stay trapped in my head, they get stuck in loops. The same worries. The same doubts. Speaking them breaks the cycle.

My coach’s presence helps me feel safe enough to share the tangled mess. The fear, the frustration, the half-formed ideas. And somehow, by the end, I’ve untangled something.

It’s not always neat. Sometimes I leave with more questions than answers. But that’s okay. Coaching isn’t about arriving at a destination. It’s about giving yourself space to think differently.

You Don’t Need All the Answers

If you’re supporting someone with ADHD, you don’t need to be a trained coach to make a difference. Just be present. Listen. Ask questions that invite exploration.

Try:

  • What do you think might help here?
  • How does that make you feel?
  • What’s the next small step you could take?

These questions can open doors without forcing conclusions.

Reflection

What does coaching mean to you? Have you ever had someone in your life who helped you talk things through?

If not, maybe it’s time to find your verbal reasoning partner. Someone who listens, without judgement, so you can hear yourself think.

That’s where real change begins.
