ADHD Myths: Busting Myth #1 “It’s Not ADHD, You’re Just Lazy”

TL;DR
I’ve launched a new series called ADHD Doodle Drops with my character ADHDappi. Each short video busts a common ADHD myth in under 30 seconds. The first one tackles the phrase I’ve heard all my life: “It’s not ADHD, you’re just lazy.” ADHD isn’t about laziness, it’s about how the brain regulates focus and motivation.

Introducing ADHD Doodle Drops

I wanted a way to explain ADHD that’s quick, clear, and a bit different. Something people could watch while the kettle’s boiling and still come away knowing more than they did a minute ago. That’s how ADHD Doodle Drops was born.

They’re short, 15 to 30 seconds, and feature ADHDappi, my lightbulb-headed sidekick. She moves, gestures, and reacts, but the ideas and words are mine.

People have already asked if the videos are “AI generated.” They’re not. The only AI is in ADHDappi’s artwork, because I can’t draw. Everything else, writing, editing, timing, is me. Instadoodle is just the tool that animates what I tell it to. Think of it like PowerPoint with more personality.

And the reason I’m doing this? Because ADHD myths keep turning up everywhere. In schools, workplaces, even at home. They don’t just irritate me, they actually cause harm. They fuel ADHD stigma, delay diagnoses, and keep people stuck in shame.

Myth #1: “It’s Not ADHD, You’re Just Lazy”

This one cuts the deepest.

I’ve been told it since I was young. Teachers said I wasn’t applying myself. Managers called me disorganised. Family suggested I wasn’t trying hard enough. The word “lazy” stuck, and for a long time I believed it.

So I worked harder. Late nights, weekends, taking on extra work to prove myself. And still, I’d slip on something small, like a bit of admin or a report. Each time, I told myself maybe they were right. Maybe I was lazy.

The truth? ADHD is not laziness. ADHD is a neurological condition. It changes how the brain regulates focus, motivation, and executive function. Laziness is a choice. ADHD isn’t.

The ADHD Facts

Here are the facts that matter:

  • ADHD is recognised worldwide by medical authorities like the NHS and the American Psychiatric Association.
  • Brain scans show clear differences in how ADHD brains handle attention and motivation.
  • ADHD is highly genetic, 70 to 80% of cases run in families.
  • People with ADHD often use more effort to get through everyday tasks than those without it.

And then there’s hyperfocus. Anyone with ADHD knows the experience of being locked into something interesting for hours. That proves focus is possible. The challenge isn’t laziness, it’s regulating attention when the task doesn’t spark enough stimulation.

The Damage This ADHD Myth Causes

This myth causes real harm.

  • Kids grow up ashamed instead of being understood.
  • Adults push themselves to burnout, thinking they just need more discipline.
  • Families and workplaces blame character instead of recognising ADHD truth.

For me, believing this myth meant decades of guilt. I worked harder than anyone else, yet still felt broken. Discipline didn’t fix it. ADHD myths like this don’t inspire, they crush.

A Personal Reflection

I remember one IT job where I spent a whole weekend glued to a system migration. I barely ate, barely slept, totally focused. Then on Monday, I forgot to send a two-line report. My boss called me lazy.

It hurt, because it wasn’t true. I’d given everything I had, but my ADHD brain didn’t switch on for the boring admin. That’s not laziness. That’s ADHD.

Why I’m Making These Doodles

That’s why ADHDappi and I made this first Doodle Drop. It’s not just a cartoon, it’s me taking on one of the most damaging ADHD myths head-on.

If just one person watches and thinks, “Maybe I’m not lazy after all, maybe this is ADHD,” then it’s worth it.

What’s Next

This is only the start. Next, ADHDappi and I will cover:

  • The myth that ADHD only affects little boys.
  • The myth that ADHD comes from bad parenting.
  • The myth that ADHD means you can’t focus.

Each myth will get its own video and companion blog.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve ever been told “It’s not ADHD, you’re just lazy,” remember this. It’s not true. ADHD is real. It’s not a weakness of character.

ADHD myths like this fuel ADHD stigma and keep people stuck. The ADHD truth is simple, it’s wiring, not laziness.

So tell me, has anyone said this to you? Drop your story in the comments. The more we share, the faster we can shut this myth down.
